Rock Up Weston-super-Mare

You'll spot Rock Up long before you reach it - a massive climbing wall structure that seems to pop straight out of Weston-super-Mare's seafront like someone's dropped a boulder on the promenade. It's an indoor climbing facility done properly, with routes for absolute beginners right through to the properly serious climbers who make it look effortless.

The place works brilliantly if you've got kids who need burning out or teenagers who think a beach holiday is terminally dull. Adults get plenty from it too - even if you've never climbed before, the staff talk you through the basics and there's genuine satisfaction in reaching a new height (terrible pun intended). Expect to spend a solid two hours here if you're having a proper go at it, though younger kids might get their fill in ninety minutes.

It's free to enter, though you'll pay to actually climb - belay lessons and sessions cost extra depending on what you fancy. That makes it a decent rainy-day option if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby like Channel View or Warren Farm, both just a few miles down the coast toward Burnham-on-Sea.

Weston-super-Mare's got plenty around it - the beach itself, the Grand Pier if the weather turns grim - so Rock Up fits nicely into a longer morning rather than as a standalone day out. Go mid-week if possible. Weekends get rammed with school groups and it loses some of its appeal.
