ROC Nuclear Fallout Shelter

Deep under the Quantock Hills near Holford sits one of Britain's eeriest Cold War relics - a former RAF radar station converted into a nuclear fallout shelter. Walking down into this bunker is genuinely unsettling. The tunnels, equipment rooms and sleeping quarters remain largely as they were abandoned, giving you a visceral sense of what life would have looked like during those tense decades when nuclear war felt genuinely possible.

It's a site for proper history enthusiasts rather than casual day-trippers. The bunker demands a bit of imagination - you won't find fancy displays or interactive exhibits here. What you get instead is authenticity, which some find far more moving than any museum interpretation. Allow a couple of hours to explore properly, and wear decent shoes because the terrain is uneven.

The shelter works well as part of a broader Somerset walking holiday. Moorhouse Campsite is just a short drive away, and it's well positioned for exploring the Quantocks themselves. If you're camping at Haven Doniford Bay or Mill Farm, you can easily make this a day trip. Spring and autumn are best - summer crowds and mud will genuinely hamper your visit.
