Robin Upright's Hill

Robin Upright's Hill is a proper woodland walk just outside Holford in the Quantock Hills area of Somerset. The forest itself isn't huge - you're looking at a manageable loop rather than a day-long expedition - but it's the sort of place where the trees do most of the talking. Ancient oaks and beeches create a green tunnel that feels properly removed from the world, even though you're never far from civilisation.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might flag if you stretch it beyond an hour. The terrain is a bit uneven underfoot in places - typical forest floor stuff - so decent boots are worth the bother. There's something about woodland walks that feels restorative without being showy about it.

It's close enough to base yourself elsewhere while exploring the broader Quantock area. The elevation gain isn't steep, which means it works as a warm-up before tackling bigger walks in the region, or as a standalone escape if the weather's turned and you want shelter under the canopy.

The best time to visit is probably spring or early autumn when the forest breathes properly and you're not battling summer crowds or winter mud. Bring water - there's nothing to buy here - and give yourself at least ninety minutes to do it justice rather than rushing through.
