Robin Cross Hill

The walk up Robin Cross Hill from Leyburn takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off with views that stretch across the Wensleydale valley. You'll pass through proper Yorkshire moorland - rough grass, a few scattered walls, the occasional grouse - before reaching the summit at just over 1,600 feet. It's not dramatic in the Alpine sense, but there's something genuinely satisfying about the breadth of the panorama once you're up there.

On a clear day you can see the spine of the Pennines running north-south, and the valley floor below is patchworked with fields and stone villages. The wind can be fierce at the top, so bring a jumper even on what looks like a warm morning. The path itself is straightforward enough - muddy in places after rain, but nothing technical. Families with reasonably confident walkers will manage it; younger kids might find the final stretch tedious.

What makes Robin Cross Hill worthwhile as part of a Wensleydale break is that it doesn't demand a full day. An hour and a half up and down, plus a pub lunch in Leyburn afterwards, fits nicely into a holiday routine. The nearby Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park sits just four miles away, making it a proper local walk rather than something that requires an expedition mindset. Worth doing if you're staying in the area; not worth driving an hour out of your way.
