There's a bronze statue of Rob Roy MacGregor standing in Stirling, and it's impossible to miss if you're wandering around town. The Highland outlaw himself - caught between folklore and actual history - gets a proper monument here, which tells you something about how much he matters to Scottish identity.

This isn't some grand visitor attraction with queues and gift shops. It's a statue in a public space, free to look at whenever you like. You'll spend five minutes here maximum, reading the inscription and taking a photo if you're into that sort of thing. The real value is context - if you're already exploring Stirling, particularly if you've been up to the castle or around the town centre, you'll pass it naturally enough.

Rob Roy himself was a cattle rustler, folk hero, and general thorn in the side of the London authorities in the early 1700s. Whether that makes him a genuine freedom fighter or just a clever bandit depends who you ask, but Stirling has decided he deserves remembering. History types will find it worthwhile as a stopping point in a larger Stirling walk; kids will find it bit abstract unless you've already got them interested in Scottish history.
