RMC - The Cave

There's a proper oddity tucked into the Gloucestershire countryside near Stroud - a carved sandstone cave that's been somebody's project for decades. RMC stands for Rudolph Müller Collection, and what you're looking at is the result of one man's obsession with hand-chiselling his way into the rock face. The cave itself is modest in scale, nothing like the cathedral caverns you might find elsewhere, but that's precisely what makes it intriguing. You wander in, run your hand along the walls, spot the tool marks and carved details, and suddenly you're connected to all those hours of labour. It feels properly intimate - not a theme park, not a museum, just someone's singular vision made stone.

Walkers and geology types will find it worth the detour. History enthusiasts too, provided they're keen on industrial archaeology and local curiosities rather than kings and castles. Children tend to get a kick out of it for about twenty minutes - the cave's tight enough to feel like an adventure, but not vast enough to hold attention much longer.

The nearest proper base is Stroud, just a few miles off, and there's excellent accommodation nearby if you're planning a longer stay. Tobacconist Farm Campsite sits barely a mile and a half away with solid reviews, while Middle Lypiatt Glamping is equally close. Both make sensible spots to settle in while you explore this corner of the Cotswolds. Painswick Glamping and Cherry Tree offer alternatives if you want slightly more distance.
