River Pant, Shalford Codham Mill

The River Pant winds through countryside just outside Braintree, and Shalford Codham Mill is where you can actually get close to it without mucking about in nettles. The old mill sits right on the water's edge, and you get proper views of the river from here - it's the sort of place that feels genuinely quiet, away from the main roads.

There's not much in the way of facilities or formal attractions. This is about water, trees, and the gentle sound of the river doing its thing. You can walk alongside the Pant for a decent stretch, and it's flat enough that you won't struggle with it. The mill building itself is worth looking at, even if you're viewing it from outside - that particular piece of Essex industrial heritage sits nicely against the bankside setting.

If you've got kids, they'll enjoy spotting ducks and poking about by the water for twenty minutes or so, but don't expect a day's entertainment. For walkers and anyone after a quiet spot to stretch their legs while exploring the Braintree area, it's well worth the detour. The surrounding countryside is pleasant if unremarkable - good for clearing your head rather than for dramatic scenery.

Hill Farm campsite is only a few miles away, making this an easy morning walk from a base there. Bring good shoes if there's been rain; the ground can be boggy in patches. No admission charge as far as I can tell, and there's no real time limit - stay as long as the peace holds you.
