The River Isla winds through Perthshire with a quiet charm that catches you off guard - it's not dramatic, but it rewards a slow wander. Near Blairgowrie, the river's best stretches offer proper walks along the banks, where you'll spot grey herons picking through the shallows and the occasional flash of a kingfisher if you're lucky enough. The water moves steadily but without fuss, passing through woodland and open moorland in turns.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're after dramatic rapids or a formal tourist experience, you'll be disappointed. But if you like riverside strolls where you can actually hear yourself think, the Isla delivers. The banks are accessible in most places without needing serious hiking boots, though waterproof trousers aren't a bad idea after rain. Most people allow two to three hours for a decent stretch, though you can pop down for twenty minutes if you're just passing through.

Families with younger kids will find it fine for a potter about, though there's not much in terms of facilities - bring a packed lunch and make an afternoon of it. Those based at Beech Hedge or Blairgowrie Holiday Park are practically on the doorstep, while Five Roads Caravan Park gives you a bit more space if you want a quieter base. Visit in spring when the water's higher and the woodland's coming alive, or autumn when the light hits the water just right. It won't make your holiday, but it's a cracking spot to fill a morning or afternoon.
