Rivacre Country Park

The Dee Valley opens up properly when you hit Rivacre Country Park, just outside Chester. It's a straightforward woodland and riverside walk with enough going on to keep you moving for an hour or two without feeling rushed. The park sits along the River Dee, and you get decent views across the valley - nothing dramatic, but the kind of place where you actually notice the seasons changing.

What you're doing here is walking. There are paths through mixed woodland, stretches along the riverbank, and open grassland where the light breaks through the trees properly. If you've got kids, they'll spend a good hour exploring without complaint. Dog walkers treat it as essential. History buffs might find the industrial heritage of the valley interesting - the park's been shaped by the Dee's role in Chester's past, though there's not much signage spelling it out for you.

Coming from Chester Fairoaks Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which sits just 3.2 miles away, Rivacre makes a cracking morning or afternoon break from the caravan. Oakwood Farm Touring Park is a similar distance, so both are well-positioned for visiting. The park itself is free to access, and you can spend as little or as much time here as you fancy. Spring and autumn are best - less muddy than winter, less busy than peak summer holidays.

It won't blow your mind, but it's the kind of place that works. A proper local favourite rather than a destination in itself.
