The cells are genuinely unsettling. Walking through Ripon Prison & Police Museum, you're confronted with the reality of Victorian justice - tight stone rooms, leg irons, the lot. It's housed in what was an actual working prison, and that authenticity makes it far more affecting than you'd expect from a small-town museum.

You'll get a proper sense of what life was like for inmates and the officers who guarded them. The police exhibits cover local law enforcement history, which might sound dry but actually tells you quite a bit about how crime and order worked in a northern market town. Plan for around ninety minutes if you're a proper history type; families with younger kids might find an hour enough before the atmosphere gets a bit heavy.

It's free entry, which is rather good value. The museum sits right in Ripon itself, so it slots nicely into a day exploring the cathedral and the market square. If you're based at Riverside Meadows Caravan Park just under a mile away, it's an easy stroll into town and worth combining with a wander around the Georgian architecture.

Not a place for a quick giggle - there's something sobering about seeing where real people were locked up. But that's precisely why it matters. You come away with a different picture of how the Victorians actually operated, beyond the sanitised version in schoolbooks.
