Ripon Canal & Basin

The canal basin in Ripon sits right at the heart of town, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick glance. Built in the 1680s to link Ripon with the River Ure, it's genuinely old - the sort of waterway that actually meant something once, back when goods moved by boat instead of lorry. These days you'll find narrowboats moored up, the water reflecting whatever the sky's doing, and a handful of cafes and restaurants planted around the edges. There's nothing flashy about it. The stone quays are weathered, the buildings are modest Georgian terraces, and that's exactly why it works.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The towpath stretches out in both directions - you can head north towards the lock gates or south along the water for a good couple of miles if you've got the legs for it. Families won't get hours out of it, mind you. Once the kids have fed the ducks and worked out which boats are which, you're probably looking at forty minutes before someone needs a drink. History buffs, though - they'll stand by the basin edge reading the plaques and trying to picture how it all functioned when Ripon's wool trade actually mattered.

It's free to walk around, and there's no admission charge. Best visited on a calm day when the water's still - the reflections are proper lovely then. If you're staying at Riverside Meadows just over the way, you can pop down any time. The canal works well as part of a broader Ripon day: cathedral, market square, then a stroll by the water to wind down.
