Ripley Lakes

The water at Ripley Lakes sits dead calm most mornings, which makes for brilliant reflections if you're after a decent photograph. You'll find these lakes just outside Knaresborough, a proper little spot that doesn't get anywhere near as rammed as you'd expect given how close it is to town.

It's a straightforward walk around the perimeter - takes about forty minutes at a leisurely pace - and the paths are well-maintained enough that you won't spend the whole time watching your footing. Anglers show up regularly, so fishing appears to be a thing here, though I'd ring ahead if that's your plan. Birdwatchers get proper excited about the place too. The mix of open water and woodland gives you decent chances of spotting something worth stopping for.

Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull after the first lap - it's not exactly packed with attractions, just a pleasant body of water and some trees. Older walkers and anyone with binoculars will have a far better time. The whole visit works nicely as a morning outing if you're based at Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road.

Bring a proper pair of shoes if there's been rain - the paths get boggy in patches. Admission appears free, and there's no time limit, so you can dip in between other activities without worrying about opening hours or rushing back.
