Rimac Nature Reserve

The walk down to Rimac from the lanes above Louth is what makes this reserve worth the effort - you descend into a proper little gorge, chalk cliffs rising either side, and suddenly you're in something that feels far removed from the flat Lincolnshire farmland. The reserve itself is a working chalk quarry turned nature hotspot, with a freshwater lake that's attracted migrating birds and the sort of botanical interest that keeps local naturalists coming back.

It's not a destination that'll keep young children occupied for hours, but walkers and anyone keen on birds will find plenty to engage them. The trails are straightforward enough, though the terrain can be muddy, especially after rain. The best time to visit is spring through early autumn when migration peaks and the wildflowers are doing their thing.

Based just a mile or so from Sunnydale Holiday Park, Rimac slots neatly into a longer day if you're staying in the area. Most people spend ninety minutes to two hours here, then head back to explore Louth's market square or push on towards the coast at Mablethorpe. There's no visitor centre to speak of, so go prepared with a guide or download what information you can beforehand. Access is free, which is reason enough to give it a go - it costs nothing to see what the Wolds can offer when you're willing to venture off the main paths.
