Rhododendron Wood

The woodland floor here turns into a riot of colour come late spring, when thousands of rhododendrons burst into bloom across the hillside. It's the sort of place that stops you mid-walk - you'll round a corner and suddenly find yourself surrounded by pink, purple, and white flowers towering overhead. The whole experience lasts maybe two hours if you're in no rush, perhaps less if you're just after a quick wander and some photos.

Rhododendron Wood sits just outside Honiton, making it a decent half-day outing from nearby Hartridge Springs Spa Glamping if you're staying in the area. The paths are well-worn and reasonably easy underfoot, though it's not entirely flat. You'll need to time your visit carefully - peak flowering is May through early June, and outside that window you're essentially walking through pleasant but unremarkable woodland.

Historically, these aren't native plants - the rhododendrons were planted generations ago - but they've settled in so thoroughly that this feels like proper woodland now. Families will find it manageable, though young children might lose interest after the first burst of colour. Serious walkers tend to treat it as a pit-stop rather than a destination in itself, which seems about right. It's free to access, and there's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. The real magic is entirely seasonal - if you can't visit in May, honestly you're not missing much.
