Reeves Wood

The woods outside Battle are proper ancient - Reeves Wood is one of those places where you can actually feel the weight of centuries as you walk through. It's a dense, quiet forest that doesn't feel engineered or manicured like some woodland attractions do. The canopy is thick enough that even on bright days there's a cathedral hush to the place.

You're mainly here for the walking. Paths wind through stands of oak and beech, with plenty of dappled light filtering through in late spring and summer. It's not a destination where you'll find play equipment or visitor facilities - this is proper woodland exploration. Families with older kids who won't complain about a two-hour ramble will find it absorbing; younger children might lose interest once the novelty of "real forest" wears off after forty minutes.

The proximity to Battle means you can tack this onto a broader day out - perhaps visit the Battle Abbey site first, then head into the woods for some air and movement. Beech Estate Campsite is barely half a mile away, so if you're based there, it's an easy morning or late-afternoon venture without driving anywhere.

No fees, no booking hassles. Just turn up with decent shoes and respect the place as it is. Go when the undergrowth isn't waterlogged - autumn's solid, as is late spring. Don't expect dramatic views or photo opportunities. Come for the quiet.
