Redwell Marsh Reserve

The marshes around Hunstanton are where Norfolk's real character shows itself - flat, open, and utterly absorbing if you know what you're looking at. Redwell Marsh Reserve is one of those places that rewards patience. You're walking through reedbed and wet grassland, binoculars essential, watching for marsh harriers quartering the ground or a sudden explosion of wigeon from the water's edge.

It's a serious spot for birdwatchers, particularly in winter when visiting waterfowl arrive in decent numbers. The reserve sits just east of Hunstanton, and even non-ornithologists will find the landscape oddly compelling - that huge Norfolk sky, the sense of space, the sound of wind through reeds. Walkers tend to get more from it than casual strollers; allow two to three hours to properly explore the trails without feeling rushed.

Timing matters here. Spring and autumn migrations bring the crowds of birds, but winter has its own appeal with overwintering species. Summer can feel a bit sparse unless you're keen on plants and insects. The trails get muddy after rain - proper Norfolk wetland conditions - so waterproof boots are non-negotiable.
