Redmires Wood

The woodland around Redmires, just southwest of Sheffield, is proper walking country. You've got mature trees, clear paths, and enough space to actually hear yourself think - which is harder than it sounds when you're this close to the city. The reservoirs add something too, catching light between the branches and giving the whole place a bit of drama when the weather turns.

It's a solid half-day walk rather than a destination you'll spend hours at. Families with kids aged six and up will manage the terrain fine, though pushchairs are a non-starter. The paths are well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so proper footwear matters. You're looking at an hour or so for a gentle loop, maybe two if you're the dawdling type who stops to identify birds.

Walkers on the Peak District trail circuit often take this in as a warm-up or cool-down, and it genuinely works for that. History types won't find much - it's just a wood, no ruins or interpretive boards - but that's partly why it's worth visiting. You get the forest without the commentary.

If you're camping at East Peak or Fox Hagg Farm nearby, this is an easy add-on. Both are within a few miles, though neither have outstanding facilities to write home about. The wood itself costs nothing and has no formal hours, so you can slip in early to avoid weekend crowds. Go on a weekday morning if you can; Sheffield residents have the same idea as you do come Saturday afternoon.
