Recreation Ground

The Recreation Ground sits just outside Castle Cary and is exactly what the name suggests - a proper local nature reserve where you can actually breathe. It's the sort of place where families turn up on a Saturday afternoon without fuss, and walkers use it as a warm-up before tackling something more ambitious in the Mendips.

What you're looking at is open grassland mixed with woodland patches, the kind of terrain that reveals different moods depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells if you're lucky. Summer is thick and green. Autumn has that satisfying crunch underfoot. There are paths through it, nothing too demanding, so kids won't grind to a halt after twenty minutes complaining their legs hurt.

It's free access and there's no nonsense about opening hours - you turn up when you fancy. Depending on how much you dawdle, you can cover it in an hour or stretch it to two. The ground itself drains reasonably well, though it gets boggy after heavy rain in the flatter bits.

If you're staying at Hadspen Glamping just down the road, or one of the other local sites like Sunnyhill Campsite, this works as a morning outing before you head off somewhere bigger. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's reliable, peaceful, and genuinely nice to walk around. The kind of place you'll actually use rather than feel obligated to tick off. Castle Cary itself is close enough for lunch afterwards too.
