Rawlsbury Camp

Scrambling up the grassy slopes of Rawlsbury Camp rewards you with one of Dorset's most commanding Iron Age hillforts. The earthworks are substantial - multiple concentric ditches and ramparts that ripple across the hilltop like a frozen wave. You can feel the effort that went into building this place some two thousand years ago, and standing in the centre of the fort, you get a proper sense of the defensive strategy at work. The views from the top stretch across the Blackmore Vale, with Sturminster Newton visible down in the valley. It's not a strenuous walk, though the slopes do get a bit steep in places, and you'll want proper footwear if there's been rain.
