Raw Head

Raw Head sits on the edge of Chester, a proper old sandstone outcrop that rises unexpectedly from the surrounding countryside. It's not dramatic - you won't be gasping at Alpine vistas - but there's something real about it, the kind of landmark that locals have walked past for centuries without making a fuss.

The sandstone itself is the draw. Weathered and rust-coloured, it's the sort of geology that makes you understand why Chester's built the way it is. You can walk around it, clamber on it if you're feeling it, and on a clear day you get views that stretch across the Cheshire Plain toward Wales. It's not a long expedition - thirty minutes tops if you're thorough - so families with younger kids won't face a rebellion halfway through.

Go when the light's golden rather than midday harsh. Early morning or late afternoon suits it better. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no information boards spelling everything out - which means it's refreshingly free of the heritage site machinery. That also means you might need to do a bit of poking around to find the best spots.

It works brilliantly as part of a wider walk around Chester or as a standalone leg-stretch if you're staying at Manor Wood or Little Pig Glamping nearby. Neither park is far enough away that it's not worth the detour. If you're after something substantial, this probably won't fill an afternoon. But for a genuine taste of Cheshire's geological bones? Worth the trip.
