Ravensworth Castle

The ruins of Ravensworth Castle stand on a hillside just outside Richmond, and they're genuinely worth the drive if you're in County Durham. What you get is a proper medieval ruin - thirteenth-century stonework, crumbling walls, and the kind of atmospheric decay that makes you actually feel the weight of history rather than read about it on a plaque.

It's not a grand reconstruction. The castle is a genuine relic, which means you're picking your way through grass and rubble to examine what's left of the fortifications. The setting matters more than the structure itself - views across the valley are excellent, and the walk up is straightforward enough without being tedious.

Historians will get more from it than casual visitors, to be honest. You need to know something about medieval military architecture to appreciate why certain walls still stand. For families, it's a decent half-hour detour if the kids enjoy exploring, but don't expect facilities or interpretation boards.

It's free, as far as I can tell, and you can visit any time. Allow about an hour including the walk and a proper look around. The nearest proper base would be Hewn Yorkshire, a five-star holiday park just 2.6 miles away - stay there and you're perfectly placed for Richmond's market square and walking country. Ravensworth slots neatly into a County Durham itinerary, though it's best combined with other attractions rather than visited in isolation.
