Ratter, Cairn site

The walk up to Ratter cairn from Thurso takes you into proper wild country - heather moorland that stretches towards the north coast with few people about. What you find at the top is a Bronze Age burial cairn, a pile of stones that's been sitting here for three and a half thousand years, watching over the Caithness landscape.

It's genuinely atmospheric without being flashy. No interpretation boards, no visitor centre - just the cairn itself, the wind, and views that extend to the sea. You get a real sense of why someone chose this exact spot to bury their dead. The walk takes about ninety minutes return depending on your pace and how much you want to linger.

Historically minded folk will find this worthwhile, though it's not a dramatic ruin or a towering monument. Families with keen walkers will enjoy it; small children might find the moorland trek tedious without the payoff of something obviously spectacular at the end. The nearest decent base is Little Croft Highlands, just outside Thurso, which sits less than a mile away - handy if you're combining this with other Bronze Age sites in the area or just wanting to explore the far north coast.

Worth doing if you're already in Thurso and have a free afternoon, but don't detour specifically for it unless you're archaeology-mad. The journey there is as much the point as the cairn itself.
