Ratch Hill

The walk up Ratch Hill takes you from Banchory into proper Highland terrain without requiring hours of graft. It's a modest peak - nothing that'll leave your legs screaming - but the views across Deeside are genuinely worth the effort, especially on a clear day when you can see right across the valley towards Aboyne.

You're looking at a straightforward hill walk that rewards steady legs and decent boots more than technical skill. What makes it worthwhile is the sense of space at the top - you've escaped the villages and roads below, and the landscape opens up properly.

This suits walkers more than families with small children, simply because it's a proper hike rather than a gentle stroll. Anyone keen on photography will appreciate the viewpoint; the light here shifts dramatically depending on the time of day and season. Allow a couple of hours round trip if you're taking your time.

Stay at Aboyne Loch Caravan Park or Banchory Lodge, both excellent bases, and you're minutes from the trailhead. Feughside is solid too. The walk sits well within a broader Deeside exploration - Banchory itself has shops and facilities, and you're positioned perfectly for exploring the wider Cairngorms area.

Timing matters. Midweek mornings you'll have it largely to yourself. Weekends draw the usual crowd. Weather changes quickly up here, so check conditions before you head out.
