Rasett Hill

The walk up Rasett Hill from Kirkby Stephen isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the view. Once you're up there, though, you understand why it's worth the slog. The fell rolls out in all directions - proper Pennine country, all green and windswept, with the Eden Valley spreading below.

It's the kind of place that rewards hillwalkers without demanding anything too technical. You get proper fell terrain, good sightlines, and on a clear day the views stretch for miles. The summit itself is unremarkable - just moorland and stone - but that's part of its charm. No theme park crowds, no visitor centre nonsense, just you and the landscape.

Reasonably fit walkers will manage this in a couple of hours there and back. Leave early if you want to avoid the afternoon cloud rolling in off the western fells. Spring and autumn are your best bets for clarity, though even in winter when the light's sharp it's worth the trip.

If you're staying at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just down the road, this makes a cracking morning outing before you settle in for the evening. It's close enough not to eat into a full day of exploring the wider Eden Valley, but challenging enough to feel like proper hill time. Worth doing if you're in the area, though don't expect anything flashy - just solid fell walking and good air.
