Raging Rivers

The Camel River churns through a narrow gorge near Little Petherick with real force - especially after heavy rain. This is Raging Rivers, and it's properly dramatic stuff. The water hammers through the rocky channel with enough power to remind you why the Cornish coast earned its reputation for being unforgiving.

It's a short walk from the village, and you'll find yourself standing on the rocks above the torrent watching the water do its thing. The sound alone makes it worth the trip - that constant roar of water against stone gets under your skin. On a grey day it feels genuinely wild. Walkers and photographers get the most from it, particularly if you're after shots of raw Cornish landscape without the crowds you'd find at Padstow itself.

Timing matters here. Visit after rain and you'll see the rivers actually justify their name. Dry spell? Less impressive, if I'm honest - just a trickle. Spring and autumn tend to be best for water flow without the summer holiday mobs clogging up the lanes around Little Petherick.

If you're staying at Padstow Holiday Village just down the road, this makes a solid half-hour detour on a walk. It breaks up the route nicely between the estuary paths and the village itself. Free to visit, no facilities, just you and the Cornish weather. Don't expect manicured viewpoints or interpretive boards - this is the real thing, untouched and honest.
