RAF Oulton Museum

The old airfield at Oulton, just outside Norwich, is where you can get properly close to Second World War aircraft and the people who flew them. This is RAF Oulton Museum - a collection of restored planes, engines, and memorabilia spread across what was an active bomber station during the war. You'll see everything from Avro Lancasters to smaller training aircraft, some of them still in flying condition. The museum is run entirely by volunteers, which explains both its charm and its slightly chaotic energy.

History buffs will spend a solid two to three hours here, reading crew logbooks and examining the detail on each aircraft. Families with younger children might find it shorter - the novelty of looking at big planes wears off faster than you'd think, unless they're already aircraft-mad. Walkers won't get much from it, to be honest. The displays are fairly static, though the outdoor setting means you can wander between buildings at your own pace.

It's free to visit, which is the only way to explore it without feeling short-changed. Check ahead before driving over from Norwich, as opening times are irregular and depend on volunteer availability - there's no permanent visitor centre. The nearby caravan parks at Deer's Mead and Top Farm are within easy reach if you're basing yourself in the area. The museum works best as a half-day add-on rather than a main event, paired with a proper walk around the Norfolk countryside or a trip into Norwich itself.
