RAF Lakenheath Chapel

The chapel at RAF Lakenheath is a small, dignified space tucked away on an active American air base just outside Brandon. You'll need to ring ahead and arrange access - it's not a drop-in affair - but it's worth the effort if you're interested in Cold War history or the American presence in Suffolk.

Inside, there's a genuine sense of stillness. The chapel serves the US servicemen and women stationed here, and it's been used for decades by generations of military personnel far from home. The architecture is functional rather than grand, but that's rather the point. You get a real feeling for what these bases meant during the Cold War, and still mean today.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this. Kids might find it a bit dull unless they're genuinely interested in military history - it's not set up as a tourist attraction with interactive displays or the like. Allow 20 minutes to half an hour, assuming you can get in.

It fits nicely into a wider Suffolk trip if you're exploring the American connections in East Anglia. Brandon itself is unremarkable, but the wider area has plenty going for it. Willow Grove Farm Glamping is nearby if you're after a base - about 2.5 miles away - and from there you can poke around the American heritage sites scattered across the region. The chapel is quiet, respectful, and genuinely interesting if you know what you're looking at.
