RAF Gravesend 1939-1944

During the Second World War, RAF Gravesend was one of the most active fighter stations in south-east England, right on the front line of the Battle of Britain. Between 1939 and 1944, Spitfires and Hurricanes thundered off these Essex runways to intercept German bombers heading for London. Today, the site stands as a sobering reminder of those intense years when a handful of pilots made the difference between invasion and survival.

What remains is largely atmospheric rather than grandiose. You won't find much in the way of buildings or exhibits - this is a working site, not a museum - but walking the old airfield grounds near Tilbury gives you a genuine sense of the place. The flat Essex landscape hasn't changed much, and you can imagine the tension during scrambles. History buffs and Second World War enthusiasts will get far more from a visit than casual tourists. Families with older kids interested in aviation might find it worthwhile, though younger children could find it a bit abstract.

It's the sort of place that rewards research beforehand. Know the stories of the squadrons that flew here, and you'll get goosebumps. Just rock up without context and it's a lot of empty field. If you're camping at either Thamesview or Badgells Wood, it's worth a pilgrimage. The nearest town is Tilbury, which gives you a good base for exploring both the station and the wider Thames estuary heritage.
