RAF Bomber Command Memorial

The memorial sits on the Pevensey Levels, a vast expanse of flat marshland that stretches towards the coast. It's a sobering place - a stone monument honouring the 55,000 aircrew who died during the bombing campaign in World War Two. The approach is straightforward: you walk out across open ground with nothing but reeds and water channels around you, which somehow makes the whole thing feel heavier.

It's not a visitor attraction in the traditional sense. There's no café, no visitor centre, no interpretation boards explaining what you're looking at. Just the memorial itself and the landscape. That's actually its strength - there's something about standing alone out there on the Levels that forces you to think about what happened, rather than being guided through the experience.

Walkers will appreciate this far more than casual tourists. You'll need proper boots if it's been wet, and the ground can be boggy. The reserve itself is worth exploring beyond just the memorial - it's excellent for birdwatching, especially in winter. Allow a couple of hours if you're making an afternoon of it.

It's a short drive from Pevensey, which makes it easily reachable from Pevensey Bay Holiday Park. The Levels are genuinely atmospheric - windswept, exposed, a bit bleak even on a sunny day. Whether that appeals depends entirely on what you're after. It's not somewhere to take restless kids for an hour. But for anyone wanting to spend time somewhere that matters, it's absolutely worth the trip.
