Radwell Meadows

The meadows spread out proper flat and open, the kind of place where you can actually see the sky without trees blocking it in. Radwell Meadows is straightforward - a picnic site near Baldock where you lay out your blanket, eat your sandwiches, and watch the Hertfordshire countryside roll past. There's water nearby, which explains why Radwell Lake campsite sits just half a mile away, and why the whole area feels green and a bit wild despite being so accessible.

It's best suited to families after something uncomplicated or walkers needing a decent spot to stop and fuel up. You won't be paying to get in or sitting through opening hours faffing - it's the sort of place you just turn up to. Bring your own food and drink, don't expect facilities, and you'll be sorted. An hour is plenty if you're just stopping, though you could stretch it to two if you're properly settled with kids who want to run about.

If you're basing yourself at Radwell Lake campsite or one of the other parks dotted around - Henlow Bridge Lakes is nearby too - this is where you'd actually eat lunch rather than sitting in a car park. The flatness is either brilliant or boring depending on your mood: brilliant if you want space and light, boring if you're after drama. Early morning gets you the place to yourself before the day warms up. Worth the stop if you're in the area, but don't go out of your way specially.
