Queen’s Square

It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - peaceful wetlands and grassland that attract everything from lapwings to water voles if you're patient enough to spot them.

The reserve works brilliantly if you're the type who wants a decent walk without needing navigation skills. There are established paths through the site, and it's manageable in an hour or two depending on how many birds you want to clock. Bring binoculars - genuinely worth it here. Spring and autumn are your best bets for seeing migration activity, though winter can be atmospheric if you don't mind the cold.

It's not going to thrill young kids desperate for activities, but if your family enjoys a gentle ramble and spotting wildlife, they'll be fine. The wetland habitats are genuinely interesting to explore, and there's something rather satisfying about the openness of it all.
