Queens Fort Rath

You'll find the remains of Queens Fort Rath just outside Belfast, a modest earthwork that's been quietly holding onto its history for centuries. It's essentially a ring fort - a raised circular bank with an internal ditch - the kind of Iron Age defensive structure that dotted Ireland long before the Normans arrived. The site itself is small and requires minimal time to walk around, maybe fifteen minutes if you're taking photographs, half an hour if you're actually reading up on what you're looking at.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this one. It's not exactly a crowd-puller in the way that major castles are, but if you're interested in early Irish settlement patterns and how people fortified themselves in those days, it's worth the trip. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards that I could see, just the earthwork itself sitting in the landscape. You'll need to do your homework beforehand or bring along someone who knows their Iron Age archaeology.

The location is genuinely useful if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks. The Pods at Streamvale, just 5.5 miles away with excellent reviews, makes an ideal launching point for exploring this corner of County Antrim. It's close enough to Belfast for a day trip into the city, yet far enough out to feel properly rural. Go in decent weather - the site offers no shelter, and you'll want clear skies to properly appreciate the views across the surrounding countryside.
