Quarry Park

The old quarry at Glenrothes has been left to do what nature does best - reclaim the space. What you get is a surprisingly good nature reserve where the industrial scars have become habitat. The water-filled pit itself is the main draw, ringed by rough grassland and scrub that's perfect for spotting dragonflies in summer. There's a short walking circuit around the perimeter, nothing strenuous, maybe forty minutes if you dawdle.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to keen birdwatchers and anyone keen on how ecosystems repair themselves. Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on the ground for a full afternoon - the novelty of the murky water and a walk around wears thin fairly quickly. But if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Kingdom or Wild Goose Glamping, it's an easy leg-stretch between other activities.

Free to visit and open whenever, really. Go in the morning if you can - better light on the water and you'll see more wildlife before the day heats up. The real value is as part of a longer Fife park holiday rather than a standalone trip. Pair it with Balbirnie Park's facilities just a couple of miles away if you need somewhere proper to base yourself. Worth a quick visit if you're in the area, but don't expect to spend half a day there.
