Quarry

The water here is properly stunning - a former quarry turned into a genuine swimming and recreation lake just outside Mintlaw. It's the sort of place that catches you off guard; you're driving through Aberdeenshire farmland and suddenly there's this substantial body of water with a sandy beach area and a real leisure vibe about it.

Swimmers love it, especially in summer when the water warms up enough to make a dip genuinely pleasant rather than character-building. There's a café on site, decent facilities, and enough space that it never feels rammed even on decent weekends. Families with kids find it handy - shallow areas for paddling, room to run about, proper supervision in place during peak times.

Walkers might do a circuit round the perimeter; it's not a massive undertaking but it's pleasant enough, particularly if you're basing yourself at Aden Caravan & Camping down the road. That site's only a couple of miles away, which makes the quarry a natural addition to a few days exploring the area.

The whole operation is genuinely free - no admission charge - which explains why locals treat it as their own. Go mid-week if you want breathing space. Weekends during school holidays get busy, understandably. Allow an hour minimum if you're just having a look about, half a day if you're actually swimming or settling in with a book. It's not a destination in itself, but it's absolutely worth knowing about if you're touring the northeast coast.
