Pwll Y Rhyd Cave

You'll find Pwll Y Rhyd Cave tucked into the limestone hills above Neath, a proper underground expedition that rewards anyone willing to scramble a bit. The cave itself is modest in scale - this isn't Mammoth Cave - but it's genuinely atmospheric once you're inside, with that cold damp air and the kind of quiet that makes you feel properly underground.

It's a cave for walkers and geology types rather than families after a quick tourist tick-box. You'll need to be reasonably fit to get there and comfortable with some climbing around uneven floors and low ceilings. The surrounding landscape is worth the effort though - the approach takes you through proper Mid Wales countryside, with the Brecon Beacons looming in the distance.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, and no formal opening hours that I can find - you're essentially accessing it as part of a walk. Free, naturally, since there's no one collecting money. Allow a couple of hours if you're making a trip of it, longer if you're combining it with other walks in the area.

The cave works best as part of a broader walking plan rather than a standalone visit - it's the kind of place that gains its appeal from the journey getting there and what else you do while you're in the hills.
