Purston Park

The old mining land near Wakefield has been given a proper second life. Purston Park sits on what used to be colliery spoil heaps - you'd never guess it now. The reserve has matured into something genuinely worth a wander, with grassland, scrub, and woodland where orchids bloom in summer if you know where to look.

It's a low-key sort of place, the kind where you'll see more dog walkers than tourists. The views across West Yorkshire from the higher bits are decent, and on a clear day you get a real sense of the landscape rolling out. The paths are manageable - nothing too taxing - so families with average-age kids will cope fine, though it won't hold their attention for hours on end. Most people allow an hour or so.

Walkers and nature spotters will get more from it than casual visitors. The bird life is decent, and if you're into insects or wildflowers, there's proper habitat here. Spring and early summer are the best times - things actually look alive rather than dormant.

It doesn't replace a proper country walk, but for a free, local green space near Wakefield, it does what it says on the tin. Worth knowing about if you're in the area.
