Purlieu Meadow

A sprawling patch of unmanicured grassland near Sturminster Newton that feels genuinely wild - no manicured borders or interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. Purlieu Meadow is proper old-school nature reserve territory, the kind of place where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just walk round taking photos.

The meadow itself is a working habitat for ground-nesting birds and invertebrates. In spring and early summer the wildflowers come through - not Instagram-ready bursts of colour, but honest flowers that thrive because nobody's fiddled with the soil chemistry. Lapwings and curlews use it, and if you're patient and quiet you'll see them. Bring binoculars.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend three hours here - but it's a solid 45-minute detour if you're in the area. The walking is easy enough, though it can get muddy depending on the season. Best visited spring through early autumn when the breeding birds are active and the meadow is actually worth photographing.

Starlight Glamping sits just down the road at under five miles, making Purlieu Meadow a natural half-morning activity if you're basing yourself there. Go early if you want to see birds rather than scare them off. Don't expect facilities - this is a proper reserve, not a visitor centre with a cafe.
