Pump Hill

The walk up Pump Hill from Kirkby Stephen takes about forty minutes if you're not rushing, and the effort pays off with proper fell views across Wensleydale and towards the Pennines. It's not a massive summit - you're looking at around 1,500 feet - but the perspective on the landscape around Kirkby Stephen is genuinely worth the leg work.

The fell itself is open moorland, which means you get wind and exposure but also uncluttered sightlines. On a clear day you can trace the dales spreading out below. The path is straightforward enough, though muddy in places, and there's a cairn at the top if you need confirmation you've arrived.

This is solid walking territory rather than a tourist trap. Families with older kids who enjoy proper fell walking will get something out of it. Young children might find the final push tedious. History enthusiasts won't find much to engage with - it's about landscape and the walking itself.

If you're staying at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just down the road, Pump Hill makes an excellent half-day outing. It works well as part of a wider exploration of the Eden Valley rather than a standalone destination. Allow two to three hours total if you want to take your time and enjoy the views rather than hammer it. Best visited when the weather's settled - visibility can shut down quickly in cloud, and then you're just trudging uphill for nothing.
