About Pumlumon Fawr
It's a proper hill walk, not a stroll. The standard route from Eisteddfa Gurig car park is about two hours up, and the terrain is bog, grass, and more bog. Wear gaiters. Your boots will get soaked, full stop. The summit itself is marked by a cairn - nothing fancy, just stones - but once you're up there and the visibility is with you, it's genuinely special.
Walkers will get the most from this. Young kids might struggle with the distance and the lack of facilities, though determined families do it regularly. History types won't find much human interest up here - it's all about raw landscape and solitude.
Allow three to four hours for the round trip, longer if you're not a regular hill walker. Free to access, obviously. Best visited May through September when the weather is less likely to ruin your day completely. Winter ascents are for experienced types only.
If you're staying at Forester's Retreat Glamping or Tyn Ffordd Fach Campsite near Aberystwyth, Pumlumon Fawr makes a solid day out. It's isolated enough to feel remote, close enough to base camp that you're not committing to a full expedition.
