Pumlumon Fach

The walk up Pumlumon Fach rewards you with proper moorland views and a genuine sense of achievement without the crowds that plague its bigger neighbour, Pumlumon Fawr. It's a straightforward summit near Aberystwyth in the Cambrian Mountains - nothing dramatic, but that's rather the point. You get sweeping vistas across Ceredigion without the scramble or the queues.

Expect rough grassland underfoot, a decent climb in the final stretch, and views that stretch toward Cardigan Bay on a clear day. The boggy sections are real, so waterproof boots aren't optional. Allow a couple of hours return from the nearest approach, though the actual summit is fairly modest - a grassy top rather than a rocky affair.

Walkers will love this. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper trudge can manage it fine, though younger ones might find the moorland repetitive and the ascent relentless. History buffs get less from Pumlumon Fach than from hillfort walks elsewhere, so go for the views and the solitude, not the stories.

Free access, naturally - it's common land. Go midweek if possible; weekends around Aberystwyth can bring crowds. The timing works beautifully with a Ceredigion coast break. Both Forester's Retreat Glamping and Tyn Ffordd Fach Campsite sit within easy driving distance, making this a proper day-walk option rather than a lung-bursting slog from town.
