Pudding Howe Hill

Pudding Howe Hill isn't going to set your heart racing - it's a modest fell between Kirkby Stephen and the higher peaks of the Pennines. That said, if you're staying in the area or doing a walking loop from town, it's worth the effort for the views across Mallerstang and the rolling moorland beyond.

The walk up is straightforward rather than dramatic. Allow about an hour for the ascent and same again to pick your way down. The summit itself is a bit of a plateau - no trig point drama, just fellwalker quiet and a sense of having earned a decent vantage point. Clear days give you sight of the bigger fells to the north and west.

This is solid territory for fell walkers wanting something between a stroll and a proper mountaineering day. Families with older kids who aren't afraid of a steady climb will do fine. Younger children might find it a bit much - there's not a lot to do at the top besides stand about and enjoy the air.

Head out from Kirkby Stephen and you're looking at accessible moorland walking without the crowds you'd get on the more famous Pennine routes. Go on a clear day or don't bother. The cloud here sits low and fast.
