Promenade - Musselburgh

The Promenade at Musselburgh is a proper coastal walk that cuts along the shoreline east of Edinburgh, giving you that rare thing - actual sea views without the crowds. It's a working stretch of beach, mind you, not some manicured resort promenade. You get the Firth of Forth spreading out in front of you, and on clear days the hills beyond Fife rise up sharp and proper across the water.

What makes it work is the straightforward appeal. Locals walk their dogs here. Families use it as a warm-up before hitting the beach proper. If you're into birds, there's a decent nature reserve element - waders and the occasional seal if you're lucky. The path itself is flat and easy underfoot, which means it's accessible even if you're not keen on scrambling over rocks.

Allow an hour for a decent walk one way. Come at low tide if you want more beach to explore, though the path stays passable whatever the water does. It's free, obviously - it's a public footpath.

What's clever is how it slots into a wider East Lothian trip. Haven Seton Sands Holiday Village sits just five miles west, so you could easily base yourself there and use the Promenade as your morning constitutional before heading inland to John Muir Country Park or the various walks around Dunbar. It's the sort of place that doesn't need to be your whole day, but it'll definitely be part of a good one.
