Prior's Wood

There's a long-defunct woodland walk about four and a half miles from Bristol, near Prior's Wood, that most people miss entirely. The name itself tells you something - this is old Somerset, the kind of place where the landscape has been shaped by centuries of quiet use rather than shouting about itself.

Prior's Wood sits in that gentle countryside between the city and the Cotswolds, where the terrain starts to roll properly and you remember why people moved out here in the first place. It's woodland, straightforward as that. The sort of walk that works best in autumn when the light gets proper golden through the trees, or early spring when things are just waking up.

Walkers will find it worthwhile - it's the kind of place to stretch your legs without needing a six-mile commitment or climbing equipment. There's no entrance fee or visitor centre drama, which is refreshing. You turn up, you walk, you leave. Families with younger kids might find the woods a touch dull after thirty minutes if the weather's turned grey, but if you've got proper walkers in the group it's solid ground. No facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water. Allow an hour or two depending on what you fancy.
