Princethorpe Great Wood

Princethorpe Great Wood spreads across a proper chunk of Warwickshire countryside just south of Rugby, and it's the sort of place where you can actually get lost in the trees without feeling like you're in danger of missing anything. The woodland here is dense enough to make you forget the M6 is reasonably close by, with well-trodden paths threading through mixed deciduous forest that shifts with the seasons. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers, autumn turns everything golden, and winter reveals the skeleton of the place in ways summer simply won't.

It's best suited to walkers and families after a casual few hours rather than a serious hike. You're looking at gentle rambling through the woods - nothing steep or technical, just straightforward forest walking. Dogs love it here, and kids will find enough fallen logs and muddy bits to keep them occupied without needing elaborate attractions. The wood itself does the heavy lifting.

No car park fees that I'm aware of, and you can spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed, though an hour is plenty if you're just after a quick circuit. Summer weekends get busy with local families, so mornings or weekdays are better if you want the place quieter. If you're basing yourself at Eriba Glade or Lairhillock nearby, this sits nicely as a morning walk before heading to one of the bigger regional attractions. It's not spectacular enough to plan a day around, but it's absolutely worth the detour when you're already in the area.
