The water here is surprisingly calm, even on blustery Sussex days. Princes Park Lake sits just inland from Pevensey, a proper freshwater spot that locals have been visiting for decades without it ever becoming overcrowded. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no theme park queues, no gift shop tat, just water and sky and the occasional fisherman.

The lake itself is decent for a stroll round, though I'll be honest - it's not dramatic. You won't get the kind of jaw-dropping views that have you reaching for your camera every five minutes. What you get instead is peaceful, which is increasingly rare. It's good for families who want the kids to burn off energy without the fuss, and walkers will appreciate the circuit without it eating up an entire afternoon. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the place attracts plenty of waterfowl.

Warren Wood Country Park, just four miles away, is rated higher and worth combining with a lake visit if you're keen on green space - that's a 5-star spot with proper facilities. Pevensey Bay Holiday Park sits closer if you're based there, though it's a modest operation. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're dawdling with the dog. The lake doesn't charge entry that I could find, which is refreshing. Winter's actually nicer than summer when the bank becomes a bit too popular with screaming toddlers on school holidays. Go on a grey weekday morning if you want the place to yourself.
