Prince Albert Gardens

The gardens sit right on Swanage's seafront, a proper slice of Victorian greenery that's seen better days but still offers a decent spot for a wander. It's essentially a formal park with planted beds, mature trees, and paths that loop around - nothing wild or rugged, just orderly and calm. You get views across the bay if you position yourself right, and on a decent day it's the kind of place where you can kill an hour without effort.

Families with young kids will get more mileage out of it than seasoned nature reserve enthusiasts. This isn't a place for serious birdwatching or rare plant spotting. It's functional, accessible, and convenient if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Swanage Bay View or Ulwell are both just under two miles away, making it an easy post-breakfast stroll. The paths are flat and well-maintained, which means buggies and older legs manage fine.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are best when the beds are actually in flower. Winter visits feel a bit bleak. There's no admission charge as far as locals know, and you won't need more than an hour unless you're genuinely dawdling. It works well as part of a bigger Swanage day rather than a destination in itself - pair it with the seafront proper, a chip shop lunch, and maybe Swanage Beach itself. The gardens aren't dramatic or remote, but they're pleasant enough and free, which counts for something on a wet Dorset afternoon.
