Prestonpans War Memorial

The 1745 Battle of Prestonpans was over in roughly fifteen minutes - a rout that embarrassed the British Army and made Bonnie Prince Charlie look unstoppable. The memorial sits on the actual battlefield east of Musselburgh, marking the spot where the Jacobites caught the government forces completely off guard.

It's not a grand monument, which somehow makes it more affecting. The setting is what gets you - open ground where you can actually picture the chaos, with views across to the Firth of Forth. On a clear day it's properly atmospheric. History buffs will spend a good hour here just walking the site and imagining the manoeuvres, while casual visitors might manage twenty minutes before moving on.

The whole thing is free and accessible year-round, though there's not much shelter, so go when the weather's decent. Early morning is best if you want to avoid any crowds, though this isn't exactly overrun with tourists.

It works well as a stop between Drummohr Camping & Glamping Site (just over a mile away) and Haven Seton Sands Holiday Village if you're doing the East Lothian circuit. The area's got decent walks and you're close enough to Musselburgh for supplies and lunch. If you're into military history or Scottish heritage, it's absolutely worth the detour. For everyone else, it depends whether you fancy a slightly windswept history lesson with good views.
