Prestonpans Totem Pole

A 67-foot Canadian totem pole stands incongruously in this corner of East Lothian, about ten minutes' drive from Musselburgh - it's the kind of thing you'll spot and think, 'Why is that here?' The answer involves a twinning partnership between Prestonpans and Powell River in British Columbia, which resulted in this carved cedar arriving in 1997. It's genuinely striking, especially if you've never seen one in person.

You won't spend long here - thirty minutes tops - but it makes a decent leg-stretch during a park holiday. The Drummohr Camping & Glamping Site is barely a mile away, and Haven Seton Sands is just two and a half miles down the road, so both are convenient bases if you're exploring this part of the coast. The totem itself sits in a small designated area, free to visit whenever you fancy.

Historically minded folk might get more from it than others, given the story of the cultural exchange, but honestly? Families with younger kids won't find much to do beyond looking and taking photos. Older children interested in indigenous art or unusual public installations will appreciate the craftsmanship - the carving is detailed and well-maintained. On a clear day the setting's pleasant enough, though it's not going to be the highlight of your trip. It's more of a 'since you're in the area' stop than a reason to plan a whole day around.
