Preston Spring Wood - Woodland Trust

The woodland walk at Preston Spring Wood is a proper tonic if you're staying around Leyburn and need to stretch your legs without committing to a full day trek. It's managed by the Woodland Trust, so you know it'll be well looked after - paths are clear, the place is clean, and there's genuine woodland character rather than some manicured park feel.

What you get here is a mix of mature trees and open glades, with the beck running through adding a bit of movement and sound to the walk. It's not massive - figure on 45 minutes to an hour if you're moving at a proper pace - but the scale works in its favour. You're not trudging for hours only to realise you've walked in a circle. Families with younger kids will manage it without complaints, and walkers breaking up a longer outing won't feel shortchanged.

The woodland's ideal if you're based at Park Leisure over in Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park - just four miles away - or trying one of the glamping setups at Eastfield. It slots nicely between a morning in Leyburn itself and an afternoon's drive into the dales proper. Spring and early summer are best, when the light filters through properly and the path isn't a mud bath.
