Portsoy Old Harbour

The harbour at Portsoy is one of those places that rewards a wander without demanding much of your time. Built in the 1690s, it's a working fishing port where boats still tie up and the smell of salt and diesel fuel tells you this isn't a theme-park version of coastal Scotland. The stone quays are worn smooth by centuries of boots and cargo, and you get the sense locals outnumber tourists by about fifty to one.

What you're really after here is atmosphere. There's no admission fee, no gift shop, no visitor centre turning the place into something it isn't. Walk the harbourside in late afternoon when the light softens and fishing boats return with their catch. The pink sandstone buildings backing onto the water are genuinely lovely, and the whole setup makes for proper good photography if you're into that sort of thing.

Historyファnatics will find plenty to chew on - this is a major herring fishing hub from centuries past, though the industry's quieter now. Families won't find rides or attractions, but kids enjoy exploring the boats and rockpools well enough. Give it ninety minutes, maybe two hours if you grab lunch at one of the waterfront cafés.

If you're based at Portsoy Links Caravan Park just up the road, the harbour's your evening stroll - close enough to pop down after supper. Pair it with a visit to Sandend Beach nearby, or drive inland to see what Banff proper has to offer. It's real working coastal Scotland, which is either exactly what you want or not what you want at all.
